Gib Rides Home, by Zilpha Keatley Snyder
Reviewed by Jordan M., 5th grade
This book is about a boy named Gibson Whittaker. In this book Gib, as he’s called, lives in the Lovell House orphanage for boys. During this book Gib gets in lots of trouble at the orphanage for things he doesn’t do.
As the story starts it’s boring but gets a whole lot better, so keep reading. After the beginning the book got soooooo good I couldn’t put it down!!!!!
One day after a lot of hoping Gib gets farmed out (that means you really don’t get adopted you just go work for people). This is where the book gets good.
I was so glad for Gib that he got farmed out. I could have jumped up and down. The people who get him are the Thornton’s.
When Gib gets there he has to take care of the horses. After a while Gib gets attached to a horse named Black Silky.
Black silky is a fast thoroughbred. Mrs.Thorntan had an accident on that horse, so one day Gib was caring for Silky when Livy (Mr. and Mrs. Thornton’s daughter) came and got mad at Gib.
That’s when it got excellent. Something happened at the end of the book where Mr. Thornton took Gib back to the orphanage. I thought that Mr. Thornton shouldn’t have done it, but he did. I also rated this book a ten.
You’ll have to read and find out what happened that made Mr. Thornton take Gib back to the orphanage, to answer all of you other questions, and see what happens to Gib.

Have you ever found out that someone is trying to murder you at school? Well, that’s exactly what is happening to Harry Potter, or so he thinks. When famous Harry Potter thinks something fishy is going on at Hogwarts, (Harry’s school name) it’s up to Ron, Hermione, and Harry to find out what’s going on.
At the beginning of the story right before he goes onto the Hogwarts train Harry finds out that Lord Voldemort’s best friend, Sirius Black, is trying to murder him.
When Harry is at school some pretty fishy things happen, like one night when everyone was asleep Ron screamed! He told everybody that was awake that Sirius Black had been standing over his bed with a knife!
Then, later on in the book one of Harry’s teachers keeps telling him that he is going to die very soon and that the Dark Lord will redeem himself again.
The characters in this book are so brave that they take risks that could get them expelled just to make sure nobody gets hurt. So, you’ll be amazed at what you read. You’ll never want to put the book down!
I guarantee you that the moment you touch this book you’ll dig right into it.

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park
Reviewed by Matthew L., 5th grade

I recommend the book A Single Shard because when I read it, it always kept me wanting to read more. It was so good it even got a Newberry Medal Award. Let me tell you a little about the book. An orphan boy named Tree-Ear lived under a bridge in North Korea just after the war. He lives with his good friend Crane-Man. Once every full moon Tree-Ear goes and watches a very good but cranky potter. One day Tree-Ear gets caught, and to repay him he has to work for Min the potter. Tree-Ear becomes a very good helper and has to go on a great journey that will take many weeks to complete for the potter. On this action packed adventure story Tree-Ear must overcome many challenges and fears to earn the potter’s trust. On his journey Tree-Ear learns a valuable lesson that it is easier to lose trust than it is to gain it.

Haunting at Home Plate, by David Patneaude
reviewed by Dylan, 5th grade

This is an excellent book by David Patneaude called Haunting at Home Plate. Anyone who likes mystery, excellent characters, and baseball will love this book. Let’s start when Andy Kirk is sitting on a 20-foot branch in 1946 at North Creek Park. He’s watching his brother Sam play baseball there. Right when his brother Sam hits a homerun something happens to Andy.
Let’s go ahead about 50 years to when Nelson is playing baseball for the Dodgers. One practice their coach, Mr. Conger, gets fired by a scout because he yelled and said bad things to them. He took their best players with him and they ended up on the Expos. Once the Dodgers came to their next practice they noticed that someone was writing letters in the dirt. Will they ever find out who is writing in the dirt? Who knows?
From a one to ten I rated it a ten.

The Hostile Hospital, by Lemony Snickett
Reviewed by James H., 5th grade

Count Olaf is up to his old tricks again in The Hostile Hospital. He has just taken over Hemlich Hospital and is doing an inspection of the staff. When he finds out the Baudelaires are working there he sends Esme to find them. Klaus and Sunny get away but Violet isn’t so lucky. After Violet gets captured, Klaus and Sunny find out Count Olaf and his friends are going to do a cranioectomy (which means removal of the head) on Violet. When Klaus and Sunny find out that their sister is going to lose her head they disguise themselves as doctors. Then they end up doing the head removal. Does Violet lose her head, do the Baudelaires escape?
I felt that the Hostile Hospital is an all around O.K. book. I Think Klaus was a character that stood out in this book. The thing about this book is that it has a lot of interesting things and it is fun to anticipate what is going to happen next.
On a scale from one to ten I would rate it an eight. It wasn’t the best book I ever read but I liked it a lot.
I would recommend it to people who like the Series of Unfortunate Events.

Fight for Life, by Laurie Halse Anderson
Reviewed by Carter, 5th grade

If you’ve read Teacher’s Pet by Laurie Halse Anderson, you would like Fight for Life. It is the first book in the Wild at Heart series.
Maggie LOVES animals. She likes them so much she can almost understand them. She lives with her grandmother in a clinic/house. Her Gran is not a “cookies-and-milk” kind of grandma. She is tough and strict, but also VERY kind. Maggie’s Gran is a veterinarian and owns a clinic.
Maggie loves to help out but NEVER works on her homework. Gran is concerned about Maggie’s grades, so she asks some kids to volunteer to do Maggie’s chores around the clinic so Maggie can do her homework. Maggie feels that the kids are taking over the clinic so she gets angry.
Then one day Maggie has such bad grades that Gran bans her from the clinic right after a ton of sick puppies come in. Maggie thinks that the puppies are coming from a puppy mill and wants to try and save the rest of the puppies and dogs that are still at the puppy mill. Will Maggie get to help out in the clinic again? Will she get to save the puppies? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
I really liked this book! If you are a dog lover then you will like this book too! Fight for Life contains sadness and happiness. I wanted to read this book because:
1. I had read two other books by the same author and loved them.
2. I have a sister named Maggie and my last name is the same as the author.

If you read this book and liked it, then you should read the other books in the Wild at Heart series.

Harris and Me, by Gary Paulsen
Reviewed by Collin M., 5th grade
Right away I want to tell you this is the best book. If you like funny books this is the one for you. The book is called Harris And Me.
It is about Gary Paulsen. His mom and dad are drunks. So one summer Gary goes to his aunt, cousin, and uncle’s house for the summer. The sheriff picks up Gary and takes him to his cousin’s house. His cousin’s name is Harris. After about and hour he arrives at their house.
He meets everybody, then Harris and him do a lot of bad and crazy things, like jumping off a loft onto a horse to wrestling pigs. Most of the things they do are Harris’ ideas.
Oh I forgot one thing, Harris’ personality. He will do almost anything and he will not cry if he gets hurt. He doesn’t really care what he does, he just does it.
Gary’s personality is a bit different. He doesn’t really want to do the things Harris does but he does them and in the middle of the book he starts to like Harris and the crazy things he does. He learns some things in life being with Harris and his family and doing things differently and soon he doesn’t want to leave.
He loves the farm and Harris and Harris’ family. One day Harris and Gary are playing army in the corn field and the sheriff drives up the driveway and knocks on the door. Harris’ mom answers and they talk for a while. Then she calls for Gary. Right then Gary knows that the time he dreaded has come.
So if you like funny and disappointing books read Harris And Me
